Dating to between 1956 and 1957, this exceptional Universal Genève Polerouter represents one of the earliest and most charismatic executions of the model that helped define mid-century modern watch design. Housed in its distinctive twisted-lyre lug case — sharp, architectural and unmistakably elegant — the Polerouter was conceived by none other than the legendary Gérald Genta, whose influence on 20th-century horology remains unparalleled.
This early “- 8” example is fitted with the desirable bumper automatic movement, a transitional engineering solution that bridges early rotor innovation with traditional winding tactility — offering that subtle mechanical presence on the wrist collectors quietly appreciate.
What truly elevates this first-series Polerouter is its configuration. It features the rarer broad arrow hands with radium luminous, with a deep pumpkin colour, paired with the highly reflective silver rehaut — a key identifying characteristic of these early executions and a detail that seasoned Universal collectors actively seek. The dial has aged into a breathtaking deep chocolate tropical tone, transforming to warm caramel under direct sunlight — organic, honest, and impossibly attractive.
The case remains beautifully defined, retaining its sharp facets and elegant angles, exactly as Genta intended. The serial and reference numbers are clearly engraved on the caseback which also proudly displays the engraved Universal Genève signature — all hallmarks of authenticity and preservation.
First-series Polerouters are increasingly difficult to source in any condition. To find one with such compelling tropicalisation, correct early features, and strong case geometry is exceptionally rare. A true connoisseur’s Universal — and a foundational piece of avant-garde post-war watchmaking.
