During the 1960s Rolex decided to expand their success with the launch of the Explorer line and during a small serial range fitted these gloss Explorer dials to their 5500 Air-Kings, nobody quite knows exactly why, perhaps to appeal to a younger audience who wanted to buy them at a more accessible price range.

This model featured in 1964 was a transitional model that would have either Precision (Caliber 1520 ) or Super Precision (Caliber 1530) on the dial

This example features a stunnning mirroe gloss gilt dial, but looking a bit closer we see an added double "T 25" silver script and underline dial meaning it was tritium luminous.

Double Swiss T25 underline dials were extremely rare to come across, especially on this already rare and unique Explorer.

This exmample has survived in immaculate condition, and features its original riveted bracelet with some wear but all in tact, and its Rolex inner and outer box. 

It is all original, and wears on a newer 78350 Oyster bracelet included in the sale to wear daily.
