Debuting just a year after the iconic Rolex Submariner, the Tudor Submariner arrived in 1954 with a simple proposition: offer the rugged construction and proven external components associated with Rolex, paired with a third-party movement, at a more accessible price point. The result became one of Tudor’s defining watches and, today, one of the most desirable vintage dive watches of its era.

 

Introduced in 1959, the reference 7928 rounded out the first generation of Tudor Submariners and would remain in production through a number of important evolutions. Its substantial 39mm stainless-steel case, crown guards and increasingly modern profile established much of the visual language that would define the Tudor Submariner for decades to come.

 

Offered here is a particularly attractive and beautifully preserved example dating to 1964.

 

The highlight is undoubtedly its original black gilt chapter-ring dial, retaining wonderfully warm, creamy lume plots with beautifully corresponding ageing to the hands (note always slightly lighter). The silver transitional script and "T Swiss T" denotation make this a defining moment in its evolution. Surrounding it is the original black long-five aluminium bezel insert, which has deepened naturally over the decades to a rich chocolate-brown tone — an exceptional combination against the glossy gilt dial.

 

The Rolex connection runs throughout the watch, with its Rolex-signed case back and winding crown. Inside sits the Fleurier calibre 350, extensively modified for Tudor and designated calibre 390 — the movement most closely associated with the classic early Tudor Submariners.

 

Completing the watch is its original riveted bracelet, with the clasp correctly dated ’65, matching the watch beautifully and surviving in remarkably well-preserved condition.

 

The combination of gilt chapter-ring dial, warm original lume, chocolate long-five bezel, matching 1965 rivet bracelet and overall preservation makes this an exceptionally compelling example of the reference.

 

For many collectors, the 7928 represents the quintessential vintage Tudor Submariner: unmistakably related to its Rolex counterpart, yet possessing an identity and collecting history entirely of its own.

 

A superb example of one of Tudor’s most important references, and increasingly difficult to find with this level of originality, character and visual balance.
