1964 Universal Genève Nina Rindt École Militaire De l'air

£0.00Price
  • Some watches tell the time. A very select few tell a story.

This extraordinary Universal Genève Compax “Nina Rindt” begins not on a racetrack, but on a French military airbase, where a young man pursued a lifelong passion for aviation. Driven by determination and exceptional ability, he excelled at the prestigious École Militaire de l’Air, graduating as Major de Promotion from the French Air Force Military School for Telecommunication Engineers.

In recognition of this remarkable achievement, he was presented with this very watch in June 1966.

From that moment onwards, it became his constant companion. Worn throughout an accomplished military career and cherished until his retirement, the watch accompanied him on an aviation journey born entirely of passion and dedication. Unlike so many vintage chronographs that have lost their history to time, this example retains a direct and documented connection to its original owner, his career, and the achievement that earned him this remarkable gift.

The watch itself is one of the most celebrated sports chronographs ever produced: the iconic Universal Genève Compax “Nina Rindt.” Famously associated with Nina Rindt, wife of Formula One World Champion Jochen Rindt, the model gained legendary status after she was photographed wearing her own example in the paddock during the golden era of motorsport.

Its beautifully balanced reverse panda dial, powered by the revered Valjoux 72 chronograph movement, represents everything collectors admire about mid-century sports watch design. The elegant twisted-lug case, manufactured by Huguenin Frères, combines purposeful functionality with unmistakable sophistication, creating a silhouette that has become one of the defining shapes of the genre.

This example is an early Mark I variation, a reference that seldom appears on the market in such beautifully preserved condition. Yet what truly elevates this watch beyond its rarity is its extraordinary provenance.

The case back remains engraved “École Militaire de l’Air,” together with the initials of its original owner, commemorating the honour bestowed upon him for graduating top of his class in 1966. Accompanying the watch is a remarkable archive of original photographs, documentation and personal accolades, tracing both his military career and the history of the watch itself.

Exceptional vintage watches are rare. Exceptional vintage watches with documented, uninterrupted provenance are rarer still. To find an early Mark I Nina Rindt Compax, preserved so beautifully and accompanied by such a deeply personal and authentic story, is something that comes along perhaps once in a generation.

We are immensely proud to offer this remarkable timepiece, complete with its accompanying photographs, documentation and memorabilia from Michael’s extraordinary journey—a watch that is not merely collected, but remembered.
