  • During the 1960s Rolex decided to expand their success with the launch of the Explorer line and during a small serial range fitted these gloss Explorer dials to their 5500 Air-Kings, nobody quite knows exactly why, perhaps to appeal to a broader, more youthful audience who wanted to buy them at a more accessible price range. These unusual Explorers have become rare and highly coveted.

This reference 5500 featured in 1964 was a transitional model that would have either Precision (Caliber 1520 ) or Super Precision (Caliber 1530, Chronomter grade) on its dial.

This example features a stunning mirror gloss gilt dial, one of the best we have seen.. Looking closer we see an added detail to the dial, A double "<T 25 Swiss <T25" silver script denoting a tritium luminous, rather than radium. This was a transitional period for Rolex and an interesting time in Rolex's production.

These double <T25  Swiss <T25  dials were extremely rare to come across, much more so than regular Swiss or only T Swiss T dials that came later, especially on these already rare and unique 5500 Explorers.

This example has survived in immaculate condition, and features a riveted bracelet in excellent condition with almost zero stretch.

This opportunity to own such a rare and unique model in the Explorer line will not come around again, don't miss out.
