1970s Bulova Royal Oak Automatic Genta

The back story of these watches is uncertain. The mysterious Bulova dubbed the 'Bulova Oak' or 'Oak-U-Tron takes inspiration from (or influences?) AP Royal Oak of the same port hole design by Gerald Genta. It is certainly a controversial, yet super piece which we have grown to love and is now coveted by collectors.

 

Released in 1980 and quickly discontinued. These were rumoured to have been turned over to AP (who crushed them) to avoid lawsuit.

 

Genta worked at Bulova during the 60s and it is claimed Bulova rejected his design originally. And later tried to capitalize on APs sucess. True or not, no one knows.

 

Regardless of this speculation, this is a cool and unique piece. A rarity amongst those who hunt them. The size of Bulova as a company was massive as was their output.

 

We certainly think these watches have developed a cult follwing and will become quite sort after in years to come.

 

The dial has a white tapisserie surface with no visible ageing, and date window. It is in very good condition.

The case appears  razor sharp showing the sharp facets at the lug sides, it has some light hairlines on the bezel but is razor sharp and looks untouched showing its angles. I would say this example is unpolished, and has it's original angles as can be seen in detail in our gallery. A few light caseback scratches.

 

The bracelet has some fair/light wear but is tight, with little to no stretch.
