Dating to 1963, we have a superb example of the classic Omega Seamaster reference 166.010, featuring its wonderfully substantial lugs and an uncommon gloss black gilt dial.

 

Black-dial Seamasters from this period are considerably harder to find than their silver-dial counterparts, particularly in attractive, well-preserved condition. This example retains a lovely sense of originality, with the dial developing just the right amount of gentle patina and character without detracting from its striking glossy finish.

 

The 166.010 is one of the great everyday vintage Omega references, with its robust 36mm stainless-steel case, screw-down case back with the embossed Seamaster hippocampus and automatic calibre 562 movement with date. On the wrist, it has a reassuringly substantial presence and could almost be considered Omega’s contemporary answer to the Rolex Datejust — elegant enough to dress up, yet robust and practical enough to wear every day.

 

This example is paired with a beautifully complementary taupe strap and has recently undergone a full mechanical overhaul by our watchmaker, making it ready to be enjoyed immediately.

 

The crown is a later Omega service replacement, something we prefer to disclose, while the watch itself remains in very good overall condition. Following its overhaul it has also been tested for water resistance; as with any vintage watch, however, we would recommend treating it as splash-resistant rather than suitable for swimming or immersion.

 

A particularly attractive and difficult-to-find early-1960s Seamaster, combining one of Omega’s most wearable case designs with the considerably rarer appeal of a gloss black gilt dial.
