  • Up for sale is a beautiful and highly original Rolex Datejust reference 1603, dating to 1973, featuring a rare gilt tropical dial with unusually thicker applied hour markers and matching hands.

This configuration presents a distinctive Wide Boy–esque aesthetic, a look most commonly associated with the early 1970s and particularly around 1972–1973, making this example especially appealing to seasoned collectors. Notably made for the Japanese market.

The dial is the true highlight: retaining its glossy lacquered finish, it displays a rich, deep chocolate tone in softer light, transforming dramatically into a full tropical hue when viewed in direct sunlight. The gilt printing remains crisp and well-defined, enhancing the warmth and depth of the dial and underscoring its originality and charm. The dial in normal light retains a nice noir gilt finish, and enhanced furthermore by a deep patina hue which has been perfectly preserved on all hour markers.

The case remains in strong condition, retaining a pleasing, honest shape and showing no signs of heavy polishing. It is paired with an earlier USA-made Jubilee bracelet from 65', in good overall condition, with only minor surface wear and light scratches to the clasp consistent with age.

This is a highly desirable and characterful Datejust—an honest, beautifully aged example with rare dial and handset traits that set it apart from standard production pieces. A unique watch, and one you are unlikely to encounter again.
