Up for sale is an exceptionally attractive 1958 Omega Ranchero, featuring the seldom-seen centre-seconds dial configuration and carrying the double reference 2990-1 / 2996.
The Ranchero is one of Omega’s most distinctive and collectible watches of the late 1950s. The model is most commonly associated with the reference 2990, featuring subsidiary seconds and the now-iconic Broad Arrow handset. The centre-seconds 2996 variant is considerably more elusive, particularly when found with an original black dial displaying such appealing age and character.
This example retains a superb black dial with beautifully patinated radium luminous material, giving the watch exactly the warm, unmistakable appearance collectors seek from an untouched vintage sports Omega. Unlike the familiar Broad Arrow configuration, the centre-seconds variant is fitted with elegant dauphine hands, creating a slightly more refined interpretation of the Ranchero design.
Introduced in 1958, the Ranchero name — evoking the idea of a ranch hand and intended in part to appeal to South American markets — never achieved the commercial success Omega had hoped for. Production was consequently relatively short-lived. Ironically, that lack of success at the time is precisely what has helped make the Ranchero so desirable today, with surviving original examples increasingly sought after by collectors.
At approximately 36mm, with a relatively slim profile, the Ranchero wears superbly by modern standards. It has the presence and legibility of a vintage tool watch without feeling cumbersome, making it an excellent everyday vintage Omega.
A rare centre-seconds Ranchero with an original black dial, beautifully aged radium and enormous character — an increasingly difficult configuration to find in this condition.
Please note the crown is a later service replacement.
